Not Of This World

God's Spirit convicts the world about Jesus
John 15:26, 16:8-11 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me... And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they do not believe in Me; of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

Jesus' kingdom isn't of this world
John 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

The "god" of this world opposes Jesus
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 (ESV) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

The "ruler" of this world was defeated on Calvary
John 12:31-32 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.

Christ reconciles us who were alienated
Colossians 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight

God conveyed us to the kingdom of The Son
Colossians 1:12-14 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Our citizenship is in heaven
Philippians 3:20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ

Ephesians 2:19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God

We are ambassadors for Christ
2 Corinthians 5:20-21 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him

No longer living like the world
Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

Don't conform to the world
Romans 12:2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Worldly lusts go in contrary to God's love
1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

James 4:4 Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Be a light to the world through service
Matthew 5:14-16 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.

1 Peter 2:11-12  Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation.

The world who hated Jesus will hate His followers
John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

John 15:18-19 If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

John 17:14 have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.

Our struggle in this world is spiritual
Ephesians 6:12 (NIV) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Victory found in a relationship with God
2 Peter 1:2-4 2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

1 John 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.

Titus 2:11-14  For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.

Saved By His Life

How Jesus draws us to Himself
John 12:31-32 [Jesus said] Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out.. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.

Jeremiah 31:3 The Lord has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.

2 Corinthians 5:18-19  Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.

Brought near by Christ's blood
Ephesians 2:11-13  Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands—  that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

Don't let temptations draw you away
James 1:13-15 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Remember the Gift of Life
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

James 1:16-18  Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.

1 John 5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

We're saved by Christ's life
Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

A New Life In Christ

Reborn through the Word
1 Peter 1:23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever

Believers in Christ are born of God
1 John 5:1 Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him.

God's Children By Faith in Jesus
Galatians 3:26-29 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

John 1:11-12 [Christ] came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name

Born in The Spirit
John 3:6,14-15 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit...  as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

Living By The Spirit
John 6:63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

Romans 8:13-14  For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

Eternal Life By Faith In Christ
John 5:24 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.

Made Alive in Christ
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.

Ephesians 2:1-10 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

A New Life In Christ
Romans 6:4, 6 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life… knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Colossians 3:9-10 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new

5 Tips to Help Your Prayer Life

Based on a chapter from the book The Incredible Power of Prayer

1. Have a close walk with God
Mark 1:35  Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.
Psalm 90:14 Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy, That we may rejoice and be glad all our days!

2. Fill the mind with Scripture
Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

3. Have Christ's compassionate love
Matthew 9:36 But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.

4. Have a living faith
Matthew 9:29 Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.”
Mark 11:24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.

5. Be forgiving
Luke 23:34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do.”  And they divided His garments and cast lots.
Matthew 6:14-15  “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

The Mind in the New Testament

Romans 12:2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (nous), that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
2 Corinthians 10:5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought (noema) into captivity to the obedience of Christ
Philippians 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding (nous), will guard your hearts and minds (noema) through Christ Jesus.
Mark 12:30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind (dianoia) , and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
Hebrews 8:10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws in their mind (dianoia) and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
1 Peter 1:13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind (dianoia), be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ

Philippians 2:5-8 (MEV)  Let this  mind (phroneo) be in you all, which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped. But He emptied Himself, taking upon Himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in the form of a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Colossians 3:2 Set your mind (phroneo) on things above, not on things on the earth.
Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded (phronema) is death, but to be spiritually minded (phronema) is life and peace.
1 Peter 4:7 (KJV) But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober (sophroneo), and watch unto prayer.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind (sophronismos).

He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. Under His Wings

Forgiveness and Acceptance

If we sin, we can go to Jesus, our Advocate
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. and if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Jesus forgives us when we confess to Him
1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Jesus is our High Priest and He understands our every struggle
Hebrews 4:14-16 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Jesus is our only mediator between us and God
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus

Jesus will never cast you away
John 6:37 All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

In Christ we no longer stand condemned
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
1 John 3:19-20 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

Jesus takes our sin and gives us His righteousness
2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We are justified (made righteous) by faith
Romans 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ

God accepts all who come with a broken heart
Psalm 34:18 The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.
Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart— These, O God, You will not despise.
Luke 18:10-14 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Let go of old ways of thinking
Isaiah 55:7-9 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; Let him return to the Lord, And He will have mercy on him; and to our God, For He will abundantly pardon. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.
Think about God's thoughts toward you
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you," says the Lord, "thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope."

God can cleanse and remove your sins
Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool.
Isaiah 44:22 I have blotted out, like a thick cloud, your transgressions, and like a cloud, your sins. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you.”
Psalm 103:12-14 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.
Micah 7:18-19  Who is a God like You, Pardoning iniquity And passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea.

God never remembers your sin again
Isaiah 43:25 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins.

What Is The Gospel?

The "gospel" or "good news" that Paul speaks about in his epistles centers around being "in Christ", because in "Adam" we all die. (1 Corinthians 15:22). "In Adam", our relationship with God was broken, we were disconnected from the source of love and life. We have a longing in our heart that only God can satisfy and all of us at some point have tried to satisfy it with something or someone else (Ecclesiastes 3:11, Jeremiah 2:13).

The "good news" of the gospel is that "in Christ", you are brought back to God and you become a new creation. (see 2 Corinthians 5:17-19). Jesus identified himself with all the bad, whether done by you or done to you and nailed it all to the cross. In return, you become identified by His good life, His thoughts, feelings and attitude. (2 Corinthians 5:21). We experience the new life by thanking God for what Jesus did and continues to do in us. (Philippians 1:6). When we really appreciate His love and value for us, it will only be natural to worship Him in the beauty of holiness.

We completely miss the point of the gospel when we inspect fruits (behaviors) of sin, but never address the tree and root, which is the separation from God. Whatever your temptations may be, the good news is that it's not up to you to overcome temptation in your own strength, but when you come into a close relationship with Jesus, He overcomes it for you. (1 Corinthians 15:57).

How we treat others different than us is a reflection of our picture of God, we all truly live out our theology (1 John 4:8). That's why it's so important for us to really get to really get to know Jesus personally and His good news (the gospel) for you and everyone around you. We need to know the value we have in God's eyes and that's what the gospel will show us. When we really take the time to know the good news about God's love for us and His power to change our hearts, we will want to share that with others.
