Learn of Him, Know Him, Abide in Him

The following verses look into the concepts of learning of, knowing, and abiding in Jesus. Also notice the role of the Holy Spirit in these verses

Jesus is surrendered to the Father's will
John 5:30 I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.

Jesus does what The Father does
John 5:19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner."

Jesus says what The Father says
John 8:28
Then Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and that I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things.

Abide in Jesus
John 15:5 I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.

Walk as He walked
1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

Jesus' invitation to learn of Him
Matthew 11:29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Be taught of Him, put on the new man
Ephesians 4:21-24 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Follow His Steps
1 Peter 2:21-24 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:  “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

Focus on your own walk with Jesus
John 21:20-22 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”

How to know we know Him and abide in Him
1 John 2:3-5  Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

1 John 3:24-23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

1 John 3:6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

1 John 4:12-16 No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us. By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.

Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God
1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.

More on knowing Jesus

Knowing God through Jesus
John 1:18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

Eternal life is about knowing God and Jesus Christ
John 17:3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.

The Holy Spirit Testifies of Jesus
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

The Knowledge of Christ is to be Supreme in our minds
1 Corinthians 2:2 For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

Philippians 3:8-11 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

2 Corinthians 10:4-6 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

God knows His own and His own know Him
John 10:14 I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own.

Glory in Knowing The Lord
Jeremiah 9:23-24
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches; But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,” says the Lord.

The Knowledge of the Holy One is Understanding
Proverbs 9:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Get To Know Him, Let Him Be Your Treasure
Proverbs 2:3-5 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the Lord, And find the knowledge of God.

Job 22:21-28 Now acquaint yourself with Him, and be at peace; Thereby good will come to you. Receive, please, instruction from His mouth, And lay up His words in your heart. If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; You will remove iniquity far from your tents. Then you will lay your gold in the dust, And the gold of Ophir among the stones of the brooks. Yes, the Almighty will be your gold And your precious silver; For then you will have your delight in the Almighty, And lift up your face to God. You will make your prayer to Him, He will hear you, And you will pay your vows. You will also declare a thing, And it will be established for you; So light will shine on your ways.

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another in the fear of God.

Philippians 1:9-11  And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Colossians 1:9-12 For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Christ's Invitation

The following is based on a chapter of Desire of Ages, written in my own words

Cast your cares upon Jesus
Whatever your worries and trials may be, spread your case before the Lord in prayer and He will help you sort it out. He will open a way to untangle yourself from any difficult and embarrassing situation. The weaker and more helpless your recognize yourself to be, the stronger you will be in the Lord's strength. Blessed relief is found in casting all our worries and cares upon Jesus, our Burden Bearer.

Serving God, Yoked to Christ
Christ calls us to wear His yoke, in other words, to unite ourselves with Him in service to God. This yoke is God's law and it will not be burdensome as long as we are yoked to Christ, depending on His strength and wisdom instead of our own. Christ bore this yoke Himself in humanity. He said,  “I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart.” Psalm 40:8. "I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me.” John 6:38.

Self-denying love
It was out of love for God, zeal for God's glory, and love for us that Jesus came down here to suffer and die for our sins. Jesus calls us to live by this same principle of self-denying love. Notice how people tried to tempt Jesus to save Himself from the cross, but He refused because if He did so, we would've had no hope of forgiveness and favor with God. Jesus said "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." He meant what He said and He did it, all in love for us. If we would believe in God's love for us, all our worries and fears would be dismissed.

Removing the yoke of worry
Many are burdened by a load of care because they're trying to live up to the expectations of others. Jesus wants them to remove this yoke of bondage. Worry is blind and cannot see what the future holds, but we can confidently hold on to the hand of Jesus who knows the end from the beginning. For every difficult situation, He has a way prepared to bring relief. Make service and honor to God your priority in life and you will have all you need.

Learning of Christ's meekness
Enter into the school of Christ, learn from His meekness. Learning of Him, being restored into His likeness, is the process by which we are trained for heaven. Learning from Him means being emancipated from ideas and habits learned from the kingdom of darkness. The soul must be delivered from all that is opposed to loyalty to God.

Surrender and peace of mind
Christ's heart was in perfect peace because in it was in perfect harmony with God. He was so focused on His mission to save souls, He never worried what others thought of Him. He was never elated by the praise of others nor did he ever feel put down by disapproval of others. No matter how much opposition or cruelty was done against Him, He was of good courage. If we would so surrender ourselves to God, we would have this same peace of mind. It is the love of self, depending on self, that destroys our peace.

Blessing others, giving God the glory
When we are born again (by faith in Christ), we will have the mind of Christ who humbled Himself so that we may be saved. When our will is surrendered to the will of God, and we use His gifts to bless others, we shall find life's burden light. Every good gift comes from God, we can do no good work of ourselves. It is God who works in us the will and the doing of His good pleasure. When we understand this, we will not be competing for positions or doing things to get noticed. When we shine, the glory goes to God alone.

How to become sweet and winsome

Ephesians 4:29-32 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Psalm 19:7-10 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Psalm 119:9-12 How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Blessed are You, O Lord! Teach me Your statutes.

Psalm 119:103-104 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way.

Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.

Proverbs 11:30 The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.

Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.

Proverbs 27:9 (NASB) Oil and incense bring joy to the heart, and the sweetness of a friend is counsel to the soul.

Proverbs 16:24
Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, Sweetness to the soul and health to the bones

Just like it's a bee's work to make honey, it's God's work that we "believe in Him whom He sent".  John 6:29. Jesus is the bread of life that gives life to our souls when we come to Him in faith and yet we wouldn't even be able to come if it weren't for God drawing us (John 6:35, 44). When we've tasted the goodness of God which leads us to repentance, we will want to invite others to taste and see that the Lord is good. (Romans 2:4, Psalm 34:8). As long as God is working in us "both to will and to do for His good pleasure", we won't be found "complaining and disputing"  Philippians 2:13-14.

If we would fill our mouths everyday with thanksgiving and praise for every good and perfect gift that comes from God, we wouldn't even have time for grumbling against one another. (James 1:17, Psalm 71:8). We are to be a good witness of a good God who withholds no good thing from them who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11). Pursue what is good for all, rejoice always, pray without ceasing, and in everything give thanks (Thessalonians 5:15-18). "Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled" Hebrews 12:14-15.

The next time you're tempted to become impatient, sing praises to God who is "longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." 2 Peter 3:9
